The largest comet in history will reach Earth by 2031
July 9, 2021

A giant comet is moving towards Earth and is the largest we have ever seen. The comet was discovered by astronomers at the University of Pennsylvania, Pedro Bernadinelli and Gary Bernstein. Now the comet is named after them.
Astronomers speculate that the Bernandinelli-Bernstein comet is 100-200 km long, or 1,000 times larger than a typical comet. Astronomers also say that it was probably ejected at the beginning of the existence of the planets in the so-called An ort cloud of small ice bodies enveloping the Solar System. The comet, also known as C / 2014 UN271, was spotted using data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) using a special telescope from the Inter-American Observatory of Cerro Tololo in Chile to capture images of distant celestial bodies in the red. from the visible spectrum.
Comet Bernandinelli-Bernstein is currently much closer to the Sun than when it was first spotted in 2014. Astronomers estimate that it will reach the closest point to the Sun in 2031, but nothing is 100% certain.
Comets have unpredictable behavior and therefore it is very difficult to know how they will move. Furthermore, although it is a giant comet, astronomers say, it will not get close enough to the Sun to be visible to the naked eye. However, anyone who wants to see it will be able to see it even through an amateur telescope.
