Nearly 190 people were killed in the three days the United States celebrated Independence Day, according to data released by the Gun Violence Archive.
In the 72 hours that the holidays lasted, 189 people were killed in the United States. while another 516 were injured in a total of 540 armed incidents registered across the country.
While the numbers are shocking, many US states have long faced increasing violence, with many experts warning of a possible “bloody summer” for months.
In Georgia, Gov. Brian Kemp sent National Guard units after a series of street killings and injuries.
In New York alone, 26 people were killed in 21 incidents in those 72 hours, a slight decrease from last year, when 30 people were killed during a July 4 celebration, New York police said.
The number of firearms incidents in New York is almost double that of 2020 and is slowly returning to the level before Rudy Giuliani came to power.
In Chicago, which faces similar problems, 14 people were killed and 69 were injured.
